City Centre Lanes Strategy
Glasgow City Council
April – September 2016
Pidgin Perfect were part of the team led by Willie Miller Urban Design to develop the City Centre Lane Strategy, a key priority for Glasgow’s City Centre Strategy and Action Plan for 2016 – 2019. Alongside elements such as safety, waste management, access, street food and drink provision in Glasgow, Pidgin Perfect developed the cultural elements of a broader strategy for the city centre lanes.
Pidgin Perfect designed a workshop programme that brought together the creative community of cultural programmers, creative spaces, as well business owners and academics to discuss the potential cultural impact of the lanes on the city. The event started with a with a guided walking tour through the Merchant City’s lanes, created by arts curator Patricia Fleming which recalled some of the cities most significant but overlooked contemporary public art found in lanes before arriving in the immediate East End for an exploratory design workshop.
The workshop was a catalyst for further activity and the ideas gathered will inform future pilot projects in the city centre lanes. Conclusions and recommendations will be published in the spring of 2017.
